Maintenance of Aquariums
I am a hobbyist and love aquariums. I have both freshwater and salty water aquariums at home. Having aquariums can be quiet hectic because the hobby requires a lot of dedication and attention if at all you are to nurture healthy water animals. You must constantly be observant on the behavior of your animals so that you may be able to detect and discern any anomalies which might be bringing strain to the animals in your aquarium.
Aquariums are usually prone to being polluted and there is need to always have a scheduled maintenance to clean them. This will enable the fish and other water animals that you put in the aquarium to become healthy and happy. You don’t want to create a stressing environment for you animals. Most of the pollution in aquariums happens as a result of the feeds given to the fish as well as the growth of algae in the aquarium.
Caring for Fish in Artificial Water Ponds
When I established my first aquarium, I didn’t have the correct expertise needed to maintain a safe environment for my fish. This made my fishes become vulnerable and they eventually succumbed to death because of the unfiltered and unclean environment. After that failed attempt, I decided to be more vigilant and exercise good care of the next bunch of fish that I decided to rare. One thing about marine animals is that they are normally too sensitive and require good care. There are some daily routine that you need to observe to achieve this.
You need to have proper lighting in the aquarium and the lights need to be turned on and off at specified intervals. Having an automatic timer can help reduce the stress of manually doing so. The fish also need to rest and that is why this has to be done at timely schedule every day.
You also need to schedule the time that you will be feeding your fish. Normally this should be at least twice a day. Any extra feeds that are not eaten should be removed from the aquarium because they may cause changes in pH and incorrect flow of the nitrogen cycle which can threaten the life of your fish. I usually feed my fish in the morning and again late in the afternoon. The uneaten feeds are usually removed in the evening.
There is also need to ensure that there is enough heat in the aquarium to give the fish optimum temperature for survival and reproduction. While checking the temperature, it is always important to too check and ensure that the water heater, aerator and filter are working properly.
Cleaning Aquariums to create a Conducive Atmosphere for Your Fish
Theirs is need to always clean your aquariums periodically, for instance after every week. Algae are the most notorious pollutants that are present in all aquariums and need to be removed. When cleaning your aquarium, you first have to start by unplugging the heater and the water filters.
Then you will have to remove any decorations that you have fixed in your aquarium and clean them too. Afterwards, you need to use an algae sponge to clean the sides of your cage thoroughly ensuring that you remove all algae in there. Now it is time to clean the gravel at the floor.
You will need to use gravel cleaner for this purpose. Start the gravel cleaner and insert if in the aquarium all the way down to the floor. Leave it there as it removes unwanted substances from the gravel. When it accumulates most of the waste, remove the waste which is normally at the top and let the gravel which may have been collected too to fall back down. Continue with this procedure till you have cleaned all the areas of your cage. Since the waste of the gravel will have forced your to take out much water from the pond as you were taking out the waste, you will have to refill it with more clean water.
After that you will need to connect the heater and the filter back. If the filter needs cleaning, then clean it before reattaching it back. Ensure that the temperatures are optimum as they before you refilled the pond with water. Return your decorations and your job is done.
